A Harmonic Algorithm for the 3D Strip Packing Problem

چکیده
In the three dimensional strip packing problem, we are given a set of three dimensional rectangular items and a three dimensional box B. The goal is to pack all the items in B such that the height of the packing is minimized. We consider the most basic version of the problem, where the items must be packed with their edges parallel to the edges of B and cannot be rotated. Building upon Caprara’s work [5, 6] for the two dimensional bin packing problem, we obtain an algorithm that given any > 0, achieves an approximation of T∞ + ≈ 1.69103 + , where T∞ is the well known number that occurs naturally in the context of bin packing. The previously known algorithms for this problem had worst case performance guarantees of 2 [12], 2.67 [19], 2.89 [16] and 3.25 [15]. Our key idea is to establish a connection between bin packing solutions for an arbitrary instance I and the strip packing solutions for the corresponding instance obtained from I by applying the Harmonic transformation to certain dimensions. Based on this connection, we also give a simple alternate proof of the T∞ + approximation for two dimensional bin packing due to Caprara [5, 6]. In particular, we show how his result follows from a simple modification of the asymptotic approximation scheme for two dimensional strip packing due to Kenyon and Rémila [14].

A new metaheuristic genetic-based placement algorithm for 2D strip packing
Given a container of fixed width, infinite height and a set of rectangular block, the 2D-strip packing problem consists of orthogonally placing all the rectangles such that the height is minimized. The position is subject to confinement of no overlapping of blocks. The problem is a complex NP-hard combinatorial optimization, thus a heuristic based on genetic algorithm is proposed to solve it. I...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Exact Algorithms for the Two Dimensional Strip Packing Problem
In this paper we consider a two dimensional strip packing problem. The problem consists of packing a set of rectangular items in one strip of width W and infinite height. They must be packed without overlapping, parallel to the edge of the strip and we assume that the items are oriented, i.e. they cannot be rotated. To solve this problem, we use three exact methods: a branch and bound method, a...
متن کاملOn the effectiveness of the Harmonic Shelf Algorithm for on-line strip packing
In [J. Csirik, G.J. Woeginger, An on-line algorithm for multidimensional bin packing, Inform. Process. Lett. 63 (1997) 171–175] the authors study the asymptotic worst case ratio between the height of the strip needed to on-line pack a list of boxes by means of the Harmonic Shelf Algorithm and the height of the strip used by an optimal algorithm. In this note we analyze the effectiveness of the ...
متن کاملStrip Packing vs. Bin Packing
In this paper we establish a general algorithmic framework between bin packing and strip packing, with which we achieve the same asymptotic bounds by applying bin packing algorithms to strip packing. More precisely we obtain the following results: (1) Any offline bin packing algorithm can be applied to strip packing maintaining the same asymptotic worst-case ratio. Thus using FFD (MFFD) as a su...
متن کاملAlgorithms for 3D guillotine cutting problems: Unbounded knapsack, cutting stock and strip packing
We present algorithms for the following three-dimensional (3D) guillotine cutting problems: Unbounded Knapsack, Cutting Stock and Strip Packing. We consider the case where the items have fixed orientation and the case where orthogonal rotations around all axes are allowed. For the Unbounded 3D Knapsack problem, we extend the recurrence formula proposed by Beasley for the Rectangular Knapsack Pr...
